Making Changes Slowly

In health as in life, the body and the mind can best accommodate change when it happens incrementally. Poco a poco. Each step that we take in a forward, positive direction will create small ripples that favor our progress, like the smooth lines trailing a duck who’s swum through rough waters.

There are big things—quitting smoking, clawing out of depression, grieving—that take planning, time, and commitment. These big changes are best supported by a licensed practitioner who has the tools to assist and accelerate your transformation. But at minimum, these big journeys require your attention, patience, and compassion.

When you’re facing big changes or challenges, do what’s in front of you. Take small bites. Take a short walk around the block. And come up with a plan for your next steps! You’ll find that with the right support and intentional, small steps, you’ll soon look back with gratitude at the journey and the courageous person that you are.
